GLENAFTON ATHLETIC F.C. 1963 (THE GLENS)
This is jist a verse or twae tae honour a’ the men
Whae have din so much for the name o’ the Glen
They’ve proved that they’re the best that we ever did see,
They’ve reached the cup final in the year sixty three.
Roger Niven’s in goal, he’s daft as ye ken,
But a’ gude goalies are gey queer men.
He’s jist like a monkey, he can “skin the cat”,
The folk a’ say he’s a great acrobat.
And young George Caldwell lives up to his name,
He’ll go higher yet and will receive mair fame.
But ah hope he’ll keep mind in the years far ahead
That this was the team that gied him the lead.
But Dandy McLean is jist as effective,
He borrowed his name frae a weel kent detective.
Jist like his namesake, he shadows his man,
Nae richt wingers bate him jist try as they can.
Big Laurie Moffat – he’s the richt hauf,
Wi’ his silky play, he looks like a toff.
His tackling and passing are a treat ye’ll agree,
When he’s playing weel – he’s the best you can see.
Big Jock McKenzie, he captains the team,
Tae win the Scottish Cup has been his greatest dream.
When the ba’s in the middle and up in the air,
It’s big Jock’s heid that aye gets there.
And in at left half is a Kirkconnel chiel,
He’s the best of a clan that aye played weel.
Billy Murray’s his name – he tackles wi’ zest,
When he hits it off he’s one of the best.
And on the richt wing, there’s a lad ca’d John Maley,
Tae see him play is to watch at a ballet.
If he’d stop turning in and stay on his wing,
He’d change his steps tae the Heilan Fling.
Then there’s Eddie Brennan, he’s a favourite of mine,
He’s aye playing best behin’ the front line.
He fetches and carries for a’ the rest,
His stamina and guts hae aye stood the test.
And centre-forward Black has won the Cup afore,
It widnae be so strange tae him tae hear the Hampden Roar.
The gemme he played last Setturday, in spite o’ a’ he scored,
Wis gude enough despite the critics, his prestige was restored.
The “Puskas” o’ Scotland, it’s him that comes next,
It’s oor ain Danny McCulloch – he’s got barrels o’ tricks.
Wi’ a shuffle and a shoogle and a twist o’ his hips,
He can leave them a’ staunin’ wi’ a grin on his lips.
And on the left wing, the last o’ them a’
Is young Billy Paton, he’s braw on the ba’.
He can bate his man nicely and then he can shoot
Wi’ richt or wae left – nae matter whit boot.
Among the reserves there’s a very special three
Whae hiv din their pairt tae earn this spree.
Ah’ll hiv tae write a wee verse aboot them.
If a’ don’t dae that, it’s no playing the gemme.
Standbye goalie, Sammy Selkirk, his often been last line.
Mony a year we got sae faur and things were looking fine.
But aye we reached a hurdle we never quite got there,
There’s nane that’s here can daur tae say – he didnae dae his share.
And Charlie Gemmell, ah wis awfy sorry ye didnae make the grade,
‘Cos tween you and me and a’ the rest there’s nane has harder played.
A’ sat beside him in the staun, at Rugby Park last year,
If he’d been playing in that gemme, Rab Roy wid’ave had mair tae fear.
And Noddie Kirkpatrick in the centre a’ year,
Can take his chances and rin like a deer.
When he draws the centre-hauf frae aff his beat,
The rest o’ the forwards could gie us a treat.
Amongst the ithers – there are gude players tae,
We ken hoo they feel that they didnae play.
Mebbe next year, they can make their mark,
But it wis only eleven that could grace Hampden Park.
But tae finish – let’s gie the officials the credit they’re due to receive.
They’ve gien the toon a team at the tap, a’ ken it’s hard tae believe.
There’s no’ much mair that they can dae, they cannae gae further up,
But we’ll be content if they can try again tae win the Scottish Cup.
Ah wrote these verses afore the gemme,
Afore they were up or were doon.
It’s nae matter noo if they won or lost,
It wis’ history made for this toon.
