THE PETER WHITE BAND
Let me introduce all the players,
The players who have played with this band,
They’ve a’ played the gither on the B.B.C.
They’ve been heard a’ ower the land.
The leader o’ the band, the pianist tae,
Is big Peter White, he made us a’ play.
He was never pleased unless we were gude,
For music was aye rinnin’ deep doon in his blude.
And on the accordions wis Big Rab and Wee Ned,
There’s a lot aboot them that is better no said.
We Ned is the thin ane, and his name’s Rutherford,
Big Simpson was weel fed, and his grub is weel stored.
Charlie Hendren wis on drums, - it’s Jim Shankland noo.
Charlie played wi’ the big bands, a’ that he could do.
But he tired o’ the travelling, the glamour and the fuss,
He later settled doon tae be ane o’ us.
Charlie Hendren could play, and he could gie ye a song
If ye listened tae him – ye couldna’ go wrong.
His modern style, it wis a treat tae enjoy,
‘Tween you and me, he wis oor pin-up boy.
But Charlie grew tired – he begun tae get auld,
It’s Jim Shankland noo and he’s a bit bald.
He disnae mind that – he can play and can sing
Wi’ “Tobermory Bay” – he makes the halls ring.
The last o’ them a’, wis Sunny on Bass,
He could fiddle tae, jist look at his face!
He tried fur lang tae put it under his chin,
He often did try – but he never did win!
There wir ither gude players, whae played wi’ this band.
There’s nae doot at a’ – it wis the best in the land.
At a time when the pey was gey wee and wisnae richt,
They played and they played for the dancers a’ nicht.
And then there were singers, who are noo in big fame.
It wis this gude band, that helped make their name!
There wis Moira … and John … they starred on T.V.
They’ve sung theirsells weel, all Cumnock can see.
But afore ah’ finish, there’s a lot mair tae be said –
Big Rab wis a comic, but ah’ll tell mair aboot Ned!
Jist watch his fingers rinnin’ ower the keys,
He dis it so quick and it’s a’ din wi’ ease.
The band has oft gaithered, tae play in some club,
Ye’ll a’ hae fun oot, it’s no like a pub.
And mony a “waddin” they played at the “Croon”
If ye a’ can keep min’, ye were never let doon.
Mony a record o’ their playing has often been made,
It’s the kind of playing that is often weel paid,
There’s some records still left tae sell the noo
If ye still buy whit’s left – it will stave aff the “broo”.
But tae finish this verse, gie a rousin’ chorus
For twenty five years lang gane bye,
This band aye finished wi’ a new nicht afore us,
Afore ah wis ready tae die.
“Written in honour of Peter White hissell who has been a pillar of strength to the musicians of Cumnock and District.”
Does anyone know who the author was?
